Client Notice: Tax Document Delivery and Reminders

We wish all our readers a very Happy New Year. As we start 2024, we look forward to helping our clients in simplifying their upcoming tax season. Our reporting team will begin saving the investment account documents needed for your 2023 filing in February as they become available and will deliver them to you in mid-March to allow plenty of time for preparation. If you are a Centerpoint client, we will deliver these directly to you via a secure link electronically. Upon request, we can also copy your CPA or tax team.  If you have had a change in your tax professional or delivery preference, please contact our Reporting Associate, Courtney Summa, at courtney@centerpointadvisors.net.

During this time, we also like to provide a few reminders as we often see an increase in both threats to cybersecurity and identity theft during tax season:

  • Know Your Sender: Please note that Centerpoint will never ask you to provide your social security number or account numbers via unsecure email, nor would we request this information through our website, chat bot, jot form, or text message.
  • Use Secure Websites: Some fraudsters clone websites. Check that there is a “lock” symbol on the left side of the URL for sites that require you to enter personal information, such as credit card or payment information.
  • Avoid Pop-up Ads and Unfamiliar Links: Do not click on links in pop-up ads and be wary of links in emails or text messages. If in doubt, call the company or sender directly, or visit the website directly by typing the URL rather than clicking or pasting.
  • Beware of Public Networks: Public networks typically are not secure, so avoid conducting transactions from public networks. This includes smartphones.
  • Remember Tried and True Safety Practices: We may be sick of hearing it, but it remains true that keeping strong passwords that are changed frequently, along with up-to-date antivirus software, is important to protecting against fraudulent activity.

Last but not least, be aware of what you and your family post on social media. Fraudsters can often compile this information (pet names, children names, vacation routines, etc.) to access your more secure information, or feign personal or professional relationship to get this information from you directly.

If you are a client of Centerpoint and have any questions regarding the timing of your tax document delivery or any of the useful tips above, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here.
