Many of those identifying as Generation Z (“Gen Z”) are staring down a mountain of debt. Despite headlines, the primary issues may not be just rising living costs and interest rates, but instead the fact that these individuals were not taught how to handle decisions around money in the first place. An overwhelming lack of financial literacy is a silent culprit trapping many young Americans who have created harmful habits and difficult emotions around money. Centerpoint’s Director of Relationship Development, Ashley Agnew CFT™, was recently featured alongside other industry experts in a special edition episode of the Money Briefing, a Wall Street Journal podcast covering the many challenges faced by young professionals today.
During the interview, Ashley, who is also the President of the Financial Therapy Association, highlights how crucial accountability is in introducing logic into financial decisions which are so often made emotionally. Whether it is the thrill of splurging on something new or digging our way out of debt, most financial decisions are made 90% emotionally and only 10% logically. Inserting an accountability partner, such as a financial planner, advisor, therapist or even a trusted friend, can help deter the impulsive decision-making habits that hinder positive financial behaviors.
