Kevin Donohue Helps Organize the Barefoot World Cup for Local Charity

July 5, 2022. By Kevin Donohue

The summer season in New England always feels way too short, with weekends filled to the brim with obligations. It can be hard to make time for fun with those we are closest to unless new traditions are made as families grow, jobs become more demanding, and locations change. Last weekend two of my friends from high school, my two brothers and I organized and hosted the 9th annual Barefoot World Cup in my hometown of Medway.  This tradition has helped keep us in touch for nearly a decade and we hope it will for many more years to come.

Through an entry fee and player fundraising, we raise money each year for a charity that is close to one of the players in the soccer tournament. For the 2022 Cup we chose The Oliva Fund which provides resources to support patients and families being cared for at the Dana-Farber/Brigham & Women’s Cancer Center at Milford Regional. The needs and services currently provided by the Oliva Fund include:

  • Palliative Care at Milford Regional
  • Reflexology
  • Reiki
  • Pastoral Care
  • Support Groups
  • Transportation
  • Massage
  • Mindfulness Meditation
  • Financial Support of Basic Necessities (Gift Cards)

A younger sister of one of the players is in the process of receiving treatment for breast cancer. Her treatment plan has moved quickly in the care of Milford Regional.  She was diagnosed in December of 2021, had a double mastectomy in January 2022, and is now going through chemo treatment. Sadly, she is only 23, however we hope that her youth and swift care will see her through to a full recovery. The Oliva Fund has been a tremendous help to her and her family. Whether it be funding for family therapy sessions, scheduling and paying for rides to treatments or lodging nearby, or even just gift cards for groceries, the Oliva Fund has been there for her every step of the way. This year the Barefoot World Cup players raised about $4,200 for the fund and a full donation will be made in her name.

The tournament always proves to be a great time, with friends and family gathering for wonderful causes and many of them local charities. We learn more about each other as well as the organizations we support along the way. If you would like to learn more about the Oliva Fund, please Click Here.
